A Pareto-frontier study comparing transformer, SSM, recurrent, and convolutional encoders on BEIR. Latency, accuracy, head-pruning, and position-shuffle measurements. Key finding: a 6.4M-parameter BiLSTM sits on the frontier next to MiniLM.
